Welcome to this blog and hopefully Kuils River too...

Hi All...

Unfortunately at this stage there isnt much that I see about cultivating the heritage of Kuils River on the web or in our town, and yet we are over 400 years old. So this blog is an attempt to begin to set things right...

This group is dedicated to uniting, informing, connecting, updating all those who live in or love the little town of Kuils River that was on the MAP before AUSTRALIA and to whom all roads lead to (or at least the N1 and the N2)...

As I've said on the Facebook group that is now 489 members :)

Some History:

In the late 1600s the Dutch East India Company started a cattle fold here. Later it was a staging post on route to Stellenbosch, marked by Milestone 15, which can be seen in the entrance hall of the municipal building. (taken from http://cybercapetown.com/WesternCape/NorthernSuburbs/KuilsRiver/)

Outposts was created in the Cape of Good hope because ships and crew experienced scurvy, head winds and damage to ships caused by storms. The outposts used for farming, fishing, trading and defending the frontier from European penetration.

Governor Simon van der Stel first camped on the banks of the Kuils River in 1679 at the start of his pioneer exploration into the countryside east of Cape Town. This became a staging post en route to Stellenbosch and was marked by a milestone that recorded that it was 15 miles from Cape Town. The oldest "post" was established on Robben Island (1654), followed by Dassen Island, Saldanha Bay in 1666, Hottentots Holland in 1672, Rietvlei in 1676, De Kuilen (Kuilsrivier) in 1683 and Klapmuts. The ruins at Oudepost are the oldest remaining example of a fort built in this way.(taken from http://www.kontrei.co.za/tourssupport/d4/kontreitoursd4p.html)

We've been on the map since 1683 people!

We also have 2 spurs, 2 malls, 1 gymn at last. Still waiting for our cinema, we used to have one of the only drive-ins. Zewenwacht Wine Farm, the beginning of the wine route, a growing population with new schools to accomodate all the families moving to Kuils River...

So, hope you enjoy my occasional proudly kuilsrivertonian posts, and news and views and hopefully eventually I'll be on some make Kuils River better board :)(also need to get a camera and my own internet soon!)
